Beckley firm sets up website for company featured in Spike TV's 'Coal'

BECKLEY — No one ever said coal mining was easy, and perhaps no one knows that better than the fathers, sons and brothers who are cutting into the Cobalt Coal Corp.’s Westchester Mountain mine featured on Spike TV’s new “Coal” series, which will premiere at 10 p.m. Wednesday.

In anticipation of the event, the company contracted a local Beckley business to beef up its website.

According to Mark Wray, chief development director of Snowball Web Management and Digital Marketing, about 10 million viewers are expected to watch the series premiere, and approximately 10 percent of those viewers will visit the website.

“We were contracted by Cobalt Coal, the stars of the show, to do their corporate website because they knew that their pre-existing website was not going to be able to handle the anticipated 1 million viewers expected to come to the website,” Wray said.

He explained that the company has been working overtime in order to get the site up and running.

“We actually expedited this contract in less than 30 days when our usual turnaround is 60 to 90 days. This is a new speed for us, and we are very excited to be involved in this highly complex national site,” Wray explained.

“We’ve ramped up the site to handle 1 million viewers. We broke out our dedicated servers, we’ve doubled the bandwidth on the servers, and all the staff here have worked diligently for the past 20-some days to make sure we get it out on time.”

Six individuals have been working on the site, and Wray said he hopes the site is an asset to the corporation by not only driving investors to the website for information but by also gathering a fanbase to lead them to the retail products from the show.

“We are excited,” Wray said. “This is a national platform website, and Cobalt Coal Corp. selected our small firm in Beckley to do this for them. We are going to let the series guide the scope of the website — depending on what the fanbase wants and what the investors want displayed on the website.”

The show will encore at 11 p.m.

Snowball Web Management and Digital Marketing is located at 102 North Heights Drive in Beckley and is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
